Chemistry 1
Lab 1: Hydrogen Gas Collection & Properties
The purpose of this lab was have students prepare hydrogen and record how it reacts with fire. Each set of students had to collect hydrogen through the bottle glass-collection set up. Then once the hydrogen was collected, the students had to conduct different experimental scenarios with fire and record their results. It was gathered that when exposed to flame, the hydrogen erupted and produced a popping sound.
Lab 2: Percent Composition of a Penny
Each set of students was to take a penny and score it with a file to expose some of the nickel that lies beneath the surface of the copper coating. The objective was to collect data in order to discover how much copper actually makes up a penny. After letting the penny soak overnight in a solution of 6 M HCl, students were to remove the copper coating from the beaker and record its mass. After comparing to the initial mass of the penny, students then calculated the percent copper of the penny.
